Q & A With Courtney

Hi Everyone!

Over the past several months, I’ve noticed a lot of new faces around here. I wanted to take a moment to say welcome, and thank you for reading. It’s hard to believe that Blonde Voyage Nashville has been around for four years. FOUR YEARS! I still can’t believe it.

After years of people asking me where to eat and my favorite city to travel to, I decided it might be fun to memorialize my adventures. Who knew someone other than my friends would read it! Blonde Voyage Nashville is about living a life filled with purpose, passion, and adventure. And of course, there’s going to be amazing food and wine along the way.

If you are new around here, let me give you the rundown. Every Tuesday, well almost every Tuesday, I have a segment on Instagram called TJ Tuesday where we sample wines from Trader Joe’s that are $10.00 or less. Some of them are incredible finds, while others are discarded after the first glass. It’s a total crapshoot.

Like many, my relationship status with travel “is complicated.” Safe travel is at the top of everyone’s mind. Whether you are looking for a little adventure and time to connect with nature or perhaps you just want to hit the open road and get away from home for a bit, check out Weekend Wanderings. Here you will find quick day trips in Tennessee as well as some neighboring cities that are the perfect escape.

Now that you know a little more about Blonde Voyage Nashville, let’s jump right into the Q&A portion.

Q&A

Where are you from originally?

I’m one of those rare native Nashvillians. Crazy, right?

Are you a full-time blogger?

Funny enough, I get this question pretty often. No, I am not a full-time blogger. I’m currently a Project Manager for a Fortune 100 company based in Nashville. I was asked this question last year when I spoke to a blogging class at my alma mater, Belmont University. While it would be an incredible opportunity, I told them that I value my benefits and a steady paycheck way too much. You should have seen their faces. I think I scarred them for life.

What do you do in your free time?

When we are not in the midst of a major pandemic, I’m spending time with my family and friends, checking out new restaurants, and scouting cities and restaurants for my next trip. Of course, a girl has to squeeze in a workout or two for balance and to make sure I can run through the airport if I’m about to miss my flight!

Since travel has looked so incredibly different this year, I’ve spent my time exploring Tennessee. I’ve chased waterfalls, explored small towns, and tried the best apple fritter in the country. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.

What have you been binge-watching during the pandemic?

More like, what have I not been watching. I don’t know about you, but if it weren’t for Netflix and Hulu, I would lose my mind. Let’s see, here are a few that have gotten me through, but if you have any favorites, please pass them along!

  • Schitt’s Creek (Cannot recommend this one enough)

  • Get Organized With The Home Edit

  • Away

  • The Social Dilemma ( total eye-opener)

  • Blacklist

  • Lucifer

  • Selling Sunset

  • Million Dollar Beach House

  • Ozark

It’s my first trip to Nashville, what are the top three things I can’t miss?

People come to Nashville for a handful of reasons, but I find most people are coming in for a bachelor/bachelorette party, concerts, or simply a long weekend getaway. Regardless of what brings you to Music City, there are a few things that you shouldn’t miss.

  1. Obligatory Trip To Broadway- Known for its neon lights, honky-tonks, and live music, no trip to Nashville would be complete without a visit to Lower Broadway. Let’s just say, not all bars are created equal. For a more authentic Music City experience, skip the celebrity-endorsed bars and check out my three friends: Layla’s, Tootsie’s, and Robert’s. If you only have time for one, Robert’s Western Room is the ONLY way to go and make sure you save room for the recession special.

  2. Lunch at Arnold’s Country Kitchen- Even though it took me 30+ years to make it to this quintessential Nashville establishment, it was well worth the wait.

Arnold's Country Kitchen is quite possibly on every "it-list" and tourist guide for Nashville. A few things you should know:

    • Go early. Arnold's opens at 10:30 am, and I usually arrive a few minutes before 11:00 am. Undoubtedly, there was a small line, and the restaurant was about 60% full.

    • Do not try to count calories or adhere to some specific diet. Splurge, use your cheat day or pretend the food is calorie-free. I don't care but you don't want to miss one bite of this goodness.

    • The menu offerings change daily. While some things will be repeated throughout the week, it is best to plot out your visit. Check out the menu here and see what catches your eye.

  3. Find out what makes Nashville so special- Maybe you want to learn more about Nashville’s musical heritage at the Ryman Auditorium or wander around the gardens and check out the latest exhibit at Cheekwood Estate and Gardens ( last seen HERE ), there’s something in this city for everyone.

Tell me some of your favorite spots to eat in Nashville?

I cannot tell you how many times I get this question, and I always say, just because a place is new doesn’t mean it’s amazing. Here are some of my favorite places in Nashville (no particular order)

Honestly, I could name about ten more places, but these are some of the places that I visit on a regular basis.

Where’s the best place to grab a cocktail?

Cocktails are an essential component of a perfect night out. Whether you prefer a classic or something a bit more adventurous, I’ve got you covered. Again, in no particular order.

I have a major sweet tooth. Where can I find the best treats in town?

Rest assured, you are not alone, and I have just the place or places if you want to do a sweet tooth tour. If you are looking for the best breakfast pastry in town, Brightside Bakeshop ( last seen HERE) is the only way to start your morning. Croissants are not to be missed but I’ve almost sampled the entire menu and it’s absolutely brilliant.

You’ve been running around Music City and need a midday pick me up? Depending on where you are, I’ve got two surefire spots: Baked on 8th and Hi-Fi Cookies. If you find yourself in the Wedgewood-Houston area, swing by Baked on 8th ( last seen HERE) and help yourself to one of their darling sugar cookies or slices of cake. Currently exploring the east side of town? Hi-Fi cookies will change your world. Slinging craft cookies inspired by their childhood favorites, make sure that you check their Instagram account before you go because they sell out.

Finally, if you’re in need of a nightcap, I can’t say enough kind words about Rebekah Turshen, the pastry chef extraordinaire at City House. Anything she makes is magic, but there’s no better way to end your evening than with a slice of her icebox cake and a glass of wine.

Best meal if I’m looking to splurge?

For me, I’m a huge fan of The Catbird Seat and Bastion but with the caveat that you plan well in advance as they both popular and require reservations. I also love the vibe at Kayne Prime. There’s nothing better than grabbing a seat at the bar, sipping a martini, and enjoying the city skyline views. Plus, their steak and sides are to die for.

Keep the questions coming. There’s nothing I enjoy more than helping others fall in love with Nashville the way I have.

Until Next Time!
